After looking online, I could not find how strong an aluminum can was so, I decided to conduct my own experiment.  First I got a can of Green Tea and I got some weights to put on it.  I first applied 5 lbs up until 20 lbs then added up 10 lbs up until 40 lbs.  The can still was not crushed under 40 lbs of weight so then I tried it at 60 lbs.  It still would not crush!  After applying 95 lbs did it finally collapse.

Of course a good scientist always repeats the experiment to make sure that the experiment results are accurate.  I repeated the experiment again (using different weights so I don’t have to put a lot of them on) and the can was crushed again in 95 lbs or so (result was a little off but this is due to the uniqueness of each can and the time that the can was spent under the weight).

So that means that the force upon the can was 422.28 Newtons (95 lbs = 43.09 kg, W = mg = 43.09 x 9.8).  That’s quite a bit of force.

So how do these little guys work?  Well it uses  a mercury based vapor which are excited by electricity which gives off a ultraviolet light.  The light bulb has a phosphor which gives of visible light.

I also wondered why they always have it in straight lines rather than that of a incandescent light but immediately

afterwards it hit me that this way there would be more surface area thus more reaction within the light bulb thus more light.

On another note, while listening to a part of the radio, I heard that a person uses 8 million joules per day which I at first thought was very big until I realized that after conversion it equals roughly 1912.04 Kilocalories or Calories.

Touch Pad!

I found out that the touch pad works through capacitance; meaning that only something with electrical charge will trigger the touch pad.  This is a system with wires overlaid each other and a change in the capacitance when your finger moves across it registers motion and thus moves the mouse.  So technically if you were to slide a piece of ham or hot dog over it, I would think it should work…if you ever try this, please let me know the results as I do like my touch pad and my laptop.

I of course used the one site that I love (Google) and I found out that the tuner picks up the pitch of the sound played and then spits out the right note through the led lights.  Well that’s all google has on how it works so I’ll try and explain it through my very low understanding of sound.

Electronic Tuner

The pitch of a music has many highs and lows so I assume the tuner picks up the cycle of each of the sound through the change in the pressure of the atmosphere and then depending on how it changes, it will give a different reading.  I’m not quite sure how else to explain it besides that except for the fact that this has become a very bad blog due to excessive amounts of malasada intake and having to stand for two days straight…

The Big Bang Theory was first proposed by Edwin Hubble when in 1929 discovered that the galaxies outside our own (the Milky Way…I truly hope you knew that) were moving away each at a speed proportional to it’s distance from us.  Hubble thought that if the universe is slowly expanding at a certain rate, it must mean that the universe was once (14 billion years ago) a single point in space.

The theory states that the single point erupted and brought about all the material in existence.  In the first 3 minutes of the explosion, the Hydrogen atoms of the world were created.  Then for the first 300 thousand years the Universe cooled down and only simple elements such as Hydrogen and Helium was present.  Then for 100 million years it was very dark and lonely until a billion years when the first stars pop up and make different galaxies.  Then there’s now with all the different galaxies.

I was also watching the World Science Festival 2009 and I saw the theory about infinite universes which talks about there being more than our universe.  Well I haven’t finished watching it so I won’t talk about it…but when I do, I might.

This video is hilarious because it seems so real yet is obviously fake and through this blog I will tell you why its fake.  First of all Electrical Tape does not conduct electricity as Mr. Erickson says. The reason is that the tape is made of rubber which does not conduct electricity as well as other materials thus it is an insulator not a conductor.

Second obviously the other battery will not transfer it’s charge into the AA batteries because the circuit is not complete.  Without a complete circuit, the charge cannot transfer from one battery to the other.  Also I believe the batteries used in the video are 1 time use batteries and do not have the required chemicals for the reaction to be reversed.



Infinite Solutions!

Well that’s it for this blog and I hope that you too can see that this video is pure fake. Please correct me if I’m wrong. (Although I doubt it.)

So with the knowledge of Physics, I will try to explain what is happening, excuse me if I have failed utterly in trying to do so.  So from my knowledge of Physics, what is going on is that when the light from my lamp hits the pencil sharpener plastic, the light disperses as a result due to the difference in speed between the different types of color (refraction).  Then the colored lights are emitted in all directions and hits the screen of either my phone, iTouch, or calculator and then is reflected to my eyes.  I’m not quite sure why I can only see the light on the screen.  I will update this post if I realize how that part works.

Besides realizing that puddles had so much to do with Physics, I also thought about eye glasses.  Last week I had been constantly wearing eye glasses which I normally do not wear thus my vision is horrible.  While going to the Djou campaign, I realized that I felt weird without my glasses and this got me thinking about how these simple objects actually improve your vision so much and make it awesome.

So as I recall from Biology, nearsightedness or farsightedness is caused due to the rays of lights hitting different places in the retina.  So what the eyeglasses do is to contort the rays of light so that they intersect at the back of your eye perfectly thus giving you perfect vision.

Earphones.

After I read an article about earphones, I’m here to share my knowledge of how these little tiny things bring such great entertainment to millions around the globe.  To understand what the magnet within the earphones are, we must go back to sound.  Sound is created by a change in the pressure of the air so that means the earphones must make some kinda vibration through the air to make the CD’s and the files into actual sound.

Within an earphones there is a diaphragm which makes the changes in pressure to make the sounds that please our ears.  The diaphragm is operated by the magnet and a voice coil.  The voice coil works through changing the polarity of the metal that is wrapped around the iron coil and with the change in polarity, the voice coil moves up or down because of the magnet and because the voice coil is attached to the diaphragm, the diaphragm moves up and down thus making the change in pressure possible.

So the earphones which provides many of us so much joy, is a very simple device that uses concepts of Physics.

Yes those are magnets...very powerful ones.

After tons of Google, I found out that you need a really powerful magnet or an electromagnet to damage your computer (mostly the hard drive which is operated by electromagnetism).  I also found out that deliberately damaging your hard drive to erase the files is called degaussing.  Degaussing is the decreasing or elimination of an unwanted magnetic field.  Degaussing causes a magnetic field to lose its alignment and leaves it in randomness thus previous data is unrecoverable.

I also discovered that magnets do not affect your cell phones.  Because cell phones use flash memory and LCD is not affected by magnets.

Magnets can be very powerful against some technology so I don’t recommend putting it near anything of value.  My facts may also not be correct so I don’t recommend testing whether a magnet can degauss a hard drive or seeing if a hard drive will mess up your cell phone.  Well I hope that enlightened you on computers, cell phones and magnets.
